Does this sound like something out of your day? If you were to actually ask someone “how are you doing?” chances are you will receive one of the following responses:

  • “I’m so busy!”

  • “We’ve got so much going on in our family!”

  • “I’m so stressed from work!”

  • “I just can’t keep up with everything I’ve got to do!”

  • “I’m exhausted!”

I recall going to Epcot one year with my husband. We visited the exhibit which demonstrated technology of the future. If you count the conveniences we have today, we probably have the equivalent of 40 or more full-time workers doing our work! So why exactly are we so busy? Why are we so stressed out and exhausted from work? Why is the lack of time our worst nightmare in business? The answer is simple! We don’t invest our time wisely on the priorities that will eliminate the busyness and stress.

There are four basic time truths that we need to zoom in on before we can become effective time investors.

  • We have all the time there is.
  • There isn’t one of us who has more or less than 24 hours in every single day.
  • We cannot save time – we can only spend it or invest it in ways that will give future payoffs in productivity.
  • This means carefully making the right choices on how to use our time productively to accomplish the tasks we are given.
  • To exercise control in our life we must control our time.
  • We are not guaranteed today or even the moment in which we are living right now. Be aware of the impact that our moment-by-moment decisions make on not only us but those around us. Procrastination and involvement in good things allow us to make bad choices with regard to careful or wise use of our time.
  • Putting in more hours will never be the answer.
  • We need to always assess what the time wasters are in our schedule and life. That old phrase “squeezing blood out of a turnip” is the same as trying to get more than 24 hours out of 1 day.

I think Alec Mackenzie summed it up best when he said, “The very notion of time management is a misnomer . . . we cannot manage time. We can only manage ourselves in relation to time.” So . . . how are you doing?
